| Story updated at 11:51 PM on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 An Athens-Clarke police officer has returned home from months of rehabilitation after a knife-wielding man attacked and nearly killed her. Sgt. Courtney Gale was discharged Wednesday afternoon from a Decatur outpatient rehab program and spent the first night in her own bed at home in Bishop since she was attacked Dec. 11, according to her mother. "We're all relieved because we know how bad it could have been, so how can you not be joyful about the next step forward?" Linda Gale said. |

Sergeant Gale, age 31, joined the Athens-Clarke County Police Department in 1998. She is a graduate of The University of Georgia with a degree in Animal Science and a minor in Criminal Justice. She graduated in 2007 from the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course – University of Louisville. |
